Social Media

This website and social media account is owned and operated by Arevalo Counseling & Mentoring, LLC (“Company,” “we,” or “us”).

Social Media Policy & Informed Consent

We welcome the ways Social Media can help normalize, uplift, and de-stigmatize conversations about mental health. At the same time, we hold ourselves accountable for maintaining clear professional boundaries when it comes to social media and online interactions.

Our goal is to outline these standards, along with their possible implications, so that you can make informed and thoughtful choices that feel right for you. Please review it to understand how we engage online as mental health professionals, and what you can expect from us in terms of responding, or not responding, to different kinds of online interactions.

If you are a current client of Arevalo Counseling & Mentoring, LLC (ACM, LLC) and have any questions about anything within this document, I encourage you to bring them up when we meet.

Goals of Our Website / Other Media:

The goal of our website and social media presence is to share resources with fellow professionals mental health, healthcare, youth and education advocates, and the general public.

Our social media page is not psychotherapy, a replacement for a therapeutic relationship, nor substitute for mental health and medical care. We do not provide clinical assessment or therapeutic advice via social media. No social media posts should be considered professional advice. The information contained in posts is general information for educational and promotional purposes only.

Blogging:

We maintain a blog as part of our web presence in order to market to potential clients and provide useful information and free resources related to our scope of practice. These articles are not a substitute for therapy and should not be interpreted as professional advice. They are strictly for educational and promotional purposes only.

Friend Requests, Follows, Connections, and Page Likes:

We don’t accept friend requests, connect requests, or follow requests from clients.  You are welcome to use your own discretion in choosing whether to “like” or “follow” our social media feeds, or to read and share our posts. Please keep in mind, however, that social media sites are public spaces, are not secure, and do not meet HIPAA standards. It’s important to note that if you choose to follow/like our social media account(s), your confidentiality cannot be guaranteed. Any interaction, such as liking, commenting, or sharing, may be visible to others and may also appear on your own social media pages. Therefore, we do not encourage follows from clients, and we will not follow them back or reciprocate any offers for interaction.

Although ACM, LLC maintains a professional social media presence for educational purposes, there is no expectation or requirement for you to access, follow, or engage with these accounts. Your decision to do so will never affect your ability to access or utilize our clinical services. In alignment with professional ethical standards, we will also never solicit or request reviews, testimonials, endorsements, ratings, or grades from clients.

In some rare circumstances, we may have people in our wider circles who previously followed us on social media ask to come in for psychotherapy. If we agree that meeting together does not constitute a problematic conflict of interest, We will suggest that we unfollow one another on social media (or we will at the very least unfollow you during treatment) to avoid some of the problems outlined above. We will do this to preserve the integrity of our working relationship.

Direct Messages

Current or former clients should not use social media to send direct messages to discuss their treatment, provide updates between sessions, or otherwise interact with us as their therapist. These sites are not secure, do not meet HIPAA standards, and we do not review these messages in a timely fashion. We will not respond to direct messages.

Non-clients should not use direct messaging to solicit professional advice or help. You should seek the support of a trusted professional who is contracted to provide therapy services to you.

We do not use text/SMS messaging to conduct therapy or crisis management for current or former clients. ACM, LLC requires that all therapy or crisis management concerns for current clients be communicated via phone call or secure voicemail message.

In the case of an emergency or mental health crisis, you should contact your local mental health crisis hotline, your own providers, your nearest emergency room or, if in the U.S., call 911. You should never use direct messages or text messages to seek mental health support. We may not see it for several hours or at all. This puts your safety at risk, and you may risk the confidentiality of your Protected Health Information.

NOTE: Any comments, emails, texts, messages, or direct messages (‘DMs’) you send that contain information related to your treatment are not secure and may compromise your confidentiality. In addition, these communications may be required to become part of your legal medical record and documented in your chart.
